Sun Prairie 8th Graders were recognized at the 2022 Sustain Dane Live Forward Awards for a project they worked on at Patrick Marsh last year with Ms. Rivera.
The students participated in a grant program from World Wildlife Fund to reduce wasted food at their school. Students collected wasted food during lunch periods and then analyzed data. Using the data, students developed a plan to reduce waste. Their plan included an awareness campaign, on-site composting, and a food share table. When these actions were implemented, Patrick Marsh reached about a 60% reduction in wasted food heading to the landfill. Students also took what they learned to host a composting seminar for our community and activities at the Sun Prairie Farmer's Market.
