Public School Open Enrollment allows parents/guardians to apply for their children to attend school in a school district other than the one in which they reside. Parents/guardians normally apply for open enrollment for the following school year during a three-month application period which begins in February and ends on the last weekday in April. However, 2011 Act 114 established a procedure by which parents may apply for open enrollment outside of the regular application period.
Please email Lisa Sprindis or call 608.834.6511, if you have any questions regarding the open enrollment application process. You will also find answers to frequently asked questions about Open Enrollment HERE.
More information about the Alternative Open Enrollment procedure can be found on the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) website.
Voluntary Placement Process for Siblings Only
Families with students who have received Voluntary Placement approval will be allowed to apply for younger siblings to attend the same school. No new applications will be accepted for voluntary placement.
All students are placed after Proof of Residency is provided. Failure to provide proof of residency will delay enrollment.
Typically, students are placed according to residence address (per Board Policy, JC, School Attendance Areas). To determine which school is assigned to your residential address, please see the School Attendance Area information.
The Sun Prairie Area School District has class size guidelines which help ensure the best educational programs throughout district schools. Placement of your child(ren) in a particular school will depend on the enrollment numbers and class sizes for your area school.
We also seek to place family members together at the elementary level whenever possible. We try to place students where there will be the fewest moves for children during the elementary school years.
When the School Board has approved boundary changes in the past, Grandfathering has historically been a practice as a part of Procedure JC-R. Grandfathering will now be reviewed each time there is a boundary adjustment.
Grandfathering related to a family move during the school year is addressed in Policy JC allowing for the option that students finish the current school year without an educational disruption. Grandfathering beyond the current year will not be allowed.
Voluntary Placement Process
Because it undermines several district priorities, the practice of Voluntary Placement will be phased out. Families with students who have received Voluntary Placement approval will be allowed to apply for younger siblings to attend the same school. However, applications by new families would not be accepted.
