McKinney–Vento Homeless Assistance Act

Any school-aged student living in a shelter or other McKinney Vento defined homeless situation is eligible. Families new to Sun Prairie may enroll immediately in the school of residence. 

Students who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence, living in:

• A shelter or transitional housing.

• Shared housing due to loss of housing, economic hardship or similar reason.

• Car, park, campground, abandoned building or other inadequate accommodation.

• Temporarily living in a motel or hotel due to loss of housing, economic hardship or similar reason. 

A student may also be living in one of the above situations and not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian. These unaccompanied youth receive additional support.

Students who are homeless as defined by the McKinney Vento Act have the right to:

• Receive a free, appropriate public education. 

• Immediately enroll in their local school.

• Continue in their school of origin through the academic year if it is in the student’s best interest. 

• Assistance with transportation to/from school. 

• Receive educational services comparable to other students, according to individual needs.
