Job Search Tips
In 2025, between 70% and 85% of jobs are
filled through personal and professional connections.
NETWORKING
Why connections are crucial:
- Hidden job market: As many as 70% of jobs are never posted publicly, making personal connections the only way to learn about and apply for them.
- Referral advantages: A referral from a current employee can increase a candidate's chances of getting an offer significantly.
- Hiring efficiency: Networking helps both job seekers and employers navigate a flooded hiring process. Automated tools can miss qualified candidates, and managers cannot review every application, making it easier for them to hire someone they know or who has been referred.
Here are 3 ways to grow your career connections:
- TALK TO ADULTS YOU KNOW: UNLOCKING CAREER CONVERSATIONS
- Talk to Teachers: Your Career Guides at School
- Job Shadows: Take your dream job for a test drive

JOB BOARDS
🚨Find a Real Job (and Not a Spam Trap)
Looking for a part-time job? Great! Just know the online job world is chaotic. Even on sites like Indeed, there’s tons of spam, duplicates, and fake listings. The best move? Find real companies you like and apply directly on their websites.
⚠️ Watch for Red Flags
- Never share your Social Security number or bank info before you’re officially hired.
- Real jobs don’t charge you for equipment, training, or background checks.
- “Work from your phone! $300/day!” = scam.
- Check for a real business email (like
@target.com, not@gmail.com).
🧠 Smart Job Search Tips
- Browse on Indeed if you want ideas—but apply through company career pages whenever possible.
- Stick with local employers you recognize (stores, restaurants, parks, schools).
- Keep a short list of where you’ve applied so you can spot fake or repeat posts.
- Ask a parent, teacher, or counselor before sending personal info.
👶 If You’re Under 18
- You may need a work permit (ask your school office).
- There are limits on late hours and certain job types for minors.
👉 Bottom line: The best jobs don’t spam you. Do your homework, apply directly, and trust your gut.
